  What is Abortion?
Abortion is wrong in any form or circumstance. It is the termination of a human life that resides in the womb.

There are more than just two groups of people dominating this issue. They are "Pro-Life," "Pro-Choice," "Anti Abortion," and "Moderate."

"Pro-life" is self explanatory. These people believe that all life is precious, tend to disagree with capitol punishment and also are very much against abortion.

"Anti Abortion" people usually see nothing wrong with capital punishment but stand against abortion.

Those who are "Pro-Choice" believe in the right of a woman to do with her body what she wishes. Some say they wouldn't have an abortion themselves but wouldn't dream of telling someone else they shouldn't.

"Moderates" either are not sure of their stance or will agree with abortion under certain "special" circumstances.

An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus/embryo, resulting in or caused by its death.

An abortion can occur spontaneously due to complications during pregnancy or can be induced, in humans and other species. In the context of human pregnancies, an abortion induced to preserve the health of the gravida (pregnant female) is termed a therapeutic abortion, while an abortion induced for any other reason is termed an elective abortion.

The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages.

Between 10% and 50% of pregnancies end in clinically apparent miscarriage, depending upon the age and health of the pregnant lady.

Induced abortion

A pregnancy can be intentionally aborted in many ways. The manner selected depends chiefly upon the gestational age of the embryo or fetus, which increases in size as it ages.

An abortion is medically referred to as therapeutic when it is performed to:

  • Save the life of the pregnant woman.
  • Preserve the woman's physical or mental health.
  • Terminate pregnancy that would result in a child born with a congenital disorder.
  • Selectively reduce the number of fetuses to lessen health risks associated with multiple pregnancy.
  • Early-term surgical abortion is a simple procedure which is safer than childbirth when performed before the 16th week.

The incidence and reasons for induced abortion vary regionally. It has been estimated that approximately 46 million abortions are performed worldwide every year.

  • There are a number of causes. One common reason is a genetic problem that prevents the baby from developing normally.
  • In some cases, the foetus does not implant properly into the lining of the womb.
  • Other causes include hormone imbalances in the mother or problems with a woman's immune system. In many cases, the cause is unknown.

  • About one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage. Sometimes this happens even before a woman knows she is pregnant.
  • The risk of miscarriage lessens as the pregnancy progresses. It decreases dramatically after the 8th week.
  • Women who are pregnant at the age of 25-30 have a miscarriage rate of 16%.
  • By the age of 40, this rises to 25%. This is because the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities increases with age.

  • Some miscarriages are complete and no surgery is needed.
  • In other cases, a small operation is carried out to reduce the chance of infection and to stop the bleeding.
  • This is done under the influence of an anaesthetic and is known as a D&C (dilatation and curettage).

  • Very rarely, the procedure can lead to an infection of the womb lining.
  • Some women use abortion as their form of birth control. This is disgusting and dangerous. It is disgusting because instead of being sexually responsible (by abstaining or protecting themselves) they seek a "quick fix" to cover-up or remedy their situation once they learn they are pregnant. These women are not taking responsibility for their actions, they opt to just make it disappear. They should control themselves. Abortion as birth control is dangerous because no matter how many technological advances have been made, it doesn't change the fact that the procedure is invasive and unnatural.

Human life is more important and should be respected. This is especially true of the innocent, the unborn. Love, respect, common sense, and responsibility play leading roles in making the correct decision in all aspects of life, but specifically concerning abortion. It is up to parents to instill these principles in their children so that they are equipped to make responsible decisions. Society's well being lies in the family unit returning to a sense of morality.
